Barrenechea will not feature in the Taça de Portugal tie against Porto, with the Benfica midfielder still recovering from a right shoulder injury.

Record writes that the Benfica number five must wait at least two more weeks for medical clearance, so the Porto meeting is off the table.

Surgery was considered, but after talks between the player and Benfica’s medical staff that option was shelved. The view is that the ongoing treatment should resolve the issue.

The report also said Barrenechea was keen to play and has expressed disappointment at missing the cup game. He shared his frustration with team-mates and coaches.

This season he has played in 29 of Benfica’s 31 competitive matches, across 15 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 10 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, one in the Supertaça and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 2,374 minutes he has one goal and one assist. He is valued at 15 million euros.
