Barry Bannan and Josh Windass remain favourites among the Sheffield Wednesday fans despite their exits in the last 12 months

Sheffield Wednesday are at the beginning of a rebuilding process after Arise Capital completed their takeover in May.

The Owls went into administration last October, and supporters were left waiting several months before a change in ownership was confirmed.

The group, led by David Storch, marked the beginning of a new era with the team’s 2-1 win over West Brom on the final day of the Championship campaign, and their first day in charge.

The Yorkshire outfit will now be looking to use the summer to begin rebuilding Henrik Pedersen’s first team squad after they lost several key players over the last 12 months, including Barry Bannan and Josh Windass.

Sheffield Wednesday finished bottom of the table, and will now be targeting a return to competitiveness in League One next season.

But here we look at the possibility of either Bannan or Windass returning to Hillsborough under the new ownership…

Barry Bannan return to Sheffield Wednesday is on the cards

Bannan made the move away from Sheffield Wednesday after a decade with the club when he signed for Millwall in the January transfer window.

The midfielder made over 400 appearances for the Owls, and became captain last summer, along with being a fan favourite.

The 36-year-old has been linked with a potential return to Hillsborough this summer following the change in ownership.

And he has further fuelled that speculation lately by posting on his social media an image of the fans celebrating with the players at Wembley Stadium from their League One play-off final win over Barnsley in 2023.

He captioned the picture: “No empty seats when the Owls make Wembley.”

Bannan had a strong connection with the supporters prior to his exit, and there’s no doubt that they would welcome him back with open arms.

A return is also quite possible, provided an agreement can be struck with Millwall to end his time with the Lions.

He signed an 18-month contract with the London outfit, meaning he still has a year left on his deal, but that doesn’t eliminate the possibility of a move back to Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

The likelihood of Josh Windass coming back to Sheffield Wednesday

Josh Windass terminated his Sheffield Wednesday contract via mutual consent last summer as the club’s financial turmoil got worse and worse.

The playmaker made the switch to Wrexham as a free agent, where he contributed 16 goals and five assists from 41 appearances in the league.

The 32-year-old has a contract with the Red Dragons until June 2028, and it was recently claimed by manager Phil Parkinson that he has no intention of letting him leave this summer.

Rangers were linked with a move to bring the player back to Ibrox last January, and the Glasgow giants are set to reignite that interest with the season now over.

But the Wrexham boss has made it clear that they received no offers in the winter, and that he’s not interested in letting go of their best players.

"There was no contact in January for Josh, not officially," said Parkinson, via the Evening Leader.

"Josh is our player, he had a good season, and we are looking forward to him building on that next year.

"We are looking to add to the quality we have got, not lose it.

"I think we would be disappointed if there wasn't some interest in our players.

"It is inevitable, but we have got the key players we want on long contracts and we are in a good position on that front.

"We are looking to build on what we did last year and improve the squad to make us really competitive again."

However, Windass has reflected on his time with Sheffield Wednesday with a post on Instagram.
