Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan joked he will be in for 'shooting practice' this week after his miss in the win over Leyton Orient.

Barry Bannan joked that he will be having ‘shooting practice’ at training this week after his remarkable miss in Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Leyton Orient.

It has been a hectic summer for the Owls, but Henrik Pedersen’s new-look side got off to the perfect start thanks to a Callum Slattery goal and a Jamal Lowe penalty.

So, it was a positive start for Wednesday, but they could have had a more comfortable afternoon, as Bannan had a golden chance to put the side 3-1 up shortly after Lowe’s spot-kick.

However, despite rounding the keeper, the classy midfielder inexplicably missed at the near post even though he had an open net.

The goal would’ve capped off a perfect day for the midfielder, who returned to Hillsborough in the summer after a short spell at Millwall.

Naturally, Bannan referenced the miss when he took to Instagram to reflect on the game, and it’s fair to say he took it on the chin, as he revealed he will be working on his finishing.

“3 points away ole ole, battling performance lads were brilliant. Shooting practice next week for me. Huge thank you to the fans amazing away end again.”

As well as that, Bannan also responded to Sky Sports sharing the miss on social media, as he stated ‘leave me alone yous’ along with a laughing emoji.

Firstly, it’s good to see a footballer show a bit of personality on social media, and Bannan’s light-hearted response to the miss displays a bit of humility.

Of course, he knows how bad a miss it was, and it may have been different if Wednesday hadn’t won the game, but the reality is that it ultimately didn’t cost them and Owls fans will be glad to see their skipper remain in good spiritis.

Given his quality on the ball, you would expect the Scotsman to score every single time, and he must’ve just lost concentration at the final moment, whilst it also may have been easier to slot it in with his right foot given the angle.

But, as outlined above, it didn’t stop Wednesday getting the three points, and Bannan effortlessly slotted back into the XI and brought a lot to the side with his ability.

Clearly, he is going to be a massive player for Pedersen, as his leadership and influence on the team will be vital if this is going to be a successful season for Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday can take encouragement from Leyton Orient performance

The number of new players at Wednesday meant nobody really knew what to expect against the O’s, and whilst it’s only one game, Pedersen will be pleased with what he saw.

The side looked well organised, they showed quality at times, and they got the goals when they needed to. '
