Barry Bannan made the switch from Sheffield Wednesday to Millwall in January

Barry Bannan has disappointed Sheffield Wednesday supporters with the revelation that his chosen number for Millwall has nothing to do with his former club.

The midfielder made his emotional farewell from the Owls during the January transfer window, ending his decade-long association with the team after joining in 2015.

He was a key part of the side, but financial difficulties led to his departure during the winter market, making the switch to the Lions.

Bannan became club captain prior to his departure, but he has agreed an 18-month contract that will keep him at the Den until the summer of 2027.

As part of the move, the 36-year-old chose the number 67 to wear on the back of his shirt, which some Owls supporters believed was a reference to the team being founded in 1867.

However, the no. 67 on the back of Bannan’s shirt is not a reference to Sheffield Wednesday at all.

Instead, it has been claimed that the number is in reference to the six-seven craze that has become popular among youngsters.

There is no deeper meaning to the numbers six-seven, but the combination of the two numbers has become a popular meme online in the last few months.

Bannan has a couple of young children himself, which could be a factor behind his decision to make reference to the viral joke.

While there’s no doubt that the 36-year-old still has a big place in his heart for Sheffield Wednesday, the use of 67 is just a coincidental reference to the year the club was originally founded.

Bannan played over 470 times for the Yorkshire outfit during his ten-and-a-half years with the team, but will now be hoping to make an impact at Millwall amid their push for promotion.

The two sides will meet at Hillsborough on 14 February, so the midfielder doesn’t have to wait too long to reunite with his former side.

Barry Bannan number change highlights how weird it is to see him away from Sheffield Wednesday

Bannan had been with Sheffield Wednesday for so long that it is now a strange sight to see him in another club’s colours.

The no. 67 is a rare one for players to take, and is one that would normally be associated with academy prospects who have been suddenly thrust into the first team.

So for Bannan to take it shows just how weird it is to see him away from Hillsborough, even if he is just getting in on the viral joke.

It will be an interesting occasion in a couple of weeks when he returns to his former club, and there’s no doubt he’ll receive a very warm reception from supporters regardless.
