Alan Nixon has reported that the Championship's fourth-place side are in the hunt for the veteran midfielder, as Alex Neil looks to end the Lions' 36-year wait for top flight football.

Bannan has spent the last 10-and-a-half years with the Owls, racking up 475 appearances for the club. He has scored 37 goals and registered 75 assists during that time, and he has been one of the most consistent players in the second tier throughout.

However, with Sheffield Wednesday set to be relegated to League One, the 36-year-old's time in South Yorkshire looks as though it is coming to an end and Millwall are ready to strike a deal.

Millwall plot transfer move for Sheffield Wednesday's Barry Bannan

Bannan has been a leader for the Owls throughout an extremely difficult few years, and he was influential in both helping the club to promotion from League One in 2023, and then keeping the club in the Championship a year later.

But, with Sheffield Wednesday needing funds, Millwall have seen now as the perfect time to strike a deal, with the Lions offering an 18-month deal, according to Nixon.

He has also stated that the midfielder earns £7k-a-week in S6, and freeing up this wage would allow for some more of the club's footballing debts to be paid off as the administrators look to tie up some of the loose ends left by Dejphon Chansiri.

Bannan signed a new deal with Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, putting pen-to-paper on a one-year contract and with just a few months to go on that particular deal, the Owls will be vulnerable to potential suitors for their star man.

Barry Bannan may want one more chance at the top

While there is no denying just how loyal Bannan has been to Sheffield Wednesday over the years, he may feel as though now is the right opportunity to push for promotion to the Premier League one more time in his career and potentially even play in the top flight once more.

The Scottish ace has made 85 appearances in the division so far in his career, and with Millwall pushing for not only a play-off place but also an automatic promotion spot, The Den could be the ideal home for the midfielder to show his class once again.

Nonetheless, Bannan has been incredibly loyal to Sheffield Wednesday over the years and this will be an extremely tough decision for the former Aston Villa man as he will be leaving the city that he has called home for more than a decade.
