It's been an incredible last couple of days for Sheffield Wednesday, who ended the season without a negative points total and without becoming the first EFL team to ever fail to win a home fixture.

They sold out Hillsborough as David Storch's takeover was completed, with a wave of optimism hitting South Yorkshire after it was also revealed they will not have a negative points total to start with in League One in 2026/27.

Dejphon Chansiri's era at the club has ended, even if there were some bright spots in that time. The brightest being promotions from League One but also Barry Bannan's long stint as a Wednesday player. The legendary figure played a staggering 477 games in 11 years.

Sheffield Wednesday can begin their rebuild under David Storch, with it already hinted that Bannan could make a swift return to Wednesday in the near future. His Millwall side finished third and he will now face Hull City in the play-offs.

But their celebrations against Oxford United yesterday were nothing like the scenes at Hillsborough. It was party time for Wednesdayites far and wide, which Storch was keen to join in with as well.

As Storch took to the pitch to take in the acclaim and to send a message to the supporters, it was captured and posted to Wednesday's Instagram feed. However, Bannan was in the replies as well.

The former Sheffield Wednesday captain responded with: "🙌🙌🙌🙌"

That sparked a number of responses pleading with him, or indeed expecting him, to "come home" and make a return to Hillsborough for 2026/27.

Promotion with Millwall could mean Bannan moves on in the summer, with it unlikely he plays Premier League football at his age. Many Wednesday fans would love for him to return home. He did so recently, with Bannan returning to Hillsborough not long ago in a Millwall shirt in what was a surreal experience for many Wednesday fans.

Barry Bannan has unfinished business with Sheffield Wednesday

For all the disappointment surrounding his exit, it would be no surprise if Bannan and Sheffield Wednesday were destined to cross paths again in a footballing sense one day in the near future.

His affiliation to the club and the city is without question, with Bannan having visited Sheffield Wednesday recently for a charity event and his love and affection remain strong, as the latest interaction shows.

It's fair to say that the Scot was the heartbeat at Hillsborough — a diminutive midfielder but with a giant influence, dictating tempo, driving standards, and absolutely dragging the team forward when it mattered most. In every sense, he became a modern Wednesday legend.

In the short-term, a return as an experienced head in the dressing room would not be the strangest reunion within the next few months. That final chapter has to be written if they can agree a deal with Millwall this summer.
