Basel sporting director David Degen has invited Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer to return to the club in the summer.

Speaking on Basel’s official podcast, Degen identified the 37-year-old as an ‘ideal candidate’ for the role, as reported by FCInterNews.

Yann Sommer will be out of contract in June, with Inter reluctant to offer him fresh terms.

Despite his loyalty to the club, the Swiss veteran has entered the twilight of his career and is likely to leave San Siro in the summer.

Meanwhile, his boyhood club, Basel, could try to lure him back to his homeland and give him a chance to retire in a familiar setting.

As for Inter, they’ve already earmarked Guglielmo Vicario as a top candidate to fill the vacancy in goal. Moreover, the Italian is reportedly keen to join the Nerazzurri.

However, they must wait until the end of the season to open talks with Tottenham Hotspur, who are fighting to secure Premier League survival.

“My preferred candidate plays about 300–350 kilometers away as the crow flies,” Degen said. “I hope he calls me soon. He knows he can call me – he’s aware of that – he just needs to send me a signal.

“Whether it will really happen, I don’t know. I don’t even know if he wants to; I’m not aware of his plans.

“I rate him very highly, both as a person and as a player. He would help us with what we have planned. That doesn’t mean Jonas Omlin isn’t also an excellent candidate.

“But if both Yann and Jonas are available, we will focus as much as possible on Yann. I played with him.

“Let’s see what the future holds – we’re open to being surprised. I’m personally happy to be surprised as well.”
