Barcelona are facing a major stumbling block in their bid to sign Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.
According to SPORT, the Italian defender is hesitant to push for a move away from Inter, leaving Barcelona increasingly disappointed.
Barcelona have established Bastoni as their primary target to bolster their backline.
The Catalan giants failed to adequately replace Inigo Martinez, who left the club to join Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Nassr last summer.
Barcelona have identified Bastoni as the ideal long-term replacement for the Spanish defender, but their strategy relies heavily on convincing him to push for a move.
Bastoni is coming off a remarkable campaign after helping Inter win their 21st Serie A title with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Parma.
The 27-year-old is considered one of the best defenders in the league, and Inter have made it clear that he’s not for sale at any price this summer.
Sporting director and club president Giuseppe Marotta have also clarified that they have not received any offers for Bastoni despite Barcelona’s interest.
While they are determined to retain his services, there’s a general feeling that a fee of around €60 million may be enough to force Inter’s hand.
However, Barcelona will struggle to match that figure given their well-documented financial situation, so they’re relying on Bastoni to bring that fee down.
If the Italian submits a transfer request, Inter may be forced to lower their demands. That hasn’t happened yet, but Barcelona aren’t backing away just yet.
They’re expected to make a final push to test Inter’s resolve, possibly exploring creative solutions such as including a player in the deal to reduce the financial burden.
