Bayer Leverkusen kicked off their Bundesliga title defence on Friday and picked up where they left off last season.
Granit Xhaka became one of the standout performers for Xabi Alonso’s side as they claimed a first-ever German top flight crown.
And the Swiss midfielder was involved again as the Werkself travelled to Borussia Mönchengladbach in their campaign opener.
It took Xhaka just 12 minutes to break the deadlock with a rifled effort from a full 30 yards that flew into the roof of Jonas Omlin’s net.
Later, defending champions had to produce another trademark late winner after Gladbach overturned their two-goal deficit.
Florian Wirtz struck in the 11th minute of added time as they maintained their 35-game unbeaten domestic streak.
A new season but still the same old Leverkusen.
