The brass at German champions Bayer Leverkusen have earmarked former Barcelona boss Xavi as a leading candidate to replace Xabi Alonso on the club’s bench.

That’s according to Marca, citing German outlet Kicker, who have this week provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes at the BayArena.

It is of course common knowledge at this point that Xabi Alonso is set to depart Leverkusen this summer.

The Spaniard has been identified as Real Madrid’s no.1 target to replace the departing Carlo Ancelotti in Spain’s capital, with an agreement between the parties expected to be reached at any moment.

As much, in turn, will leave a sizeable hole in the dugout at Bayer Leverkusen.

And one option to fill as much, it is understood, is the aforementioned Xavi.

As per Marca:

‘German magazine Kicker point out that one of the names that Leverkusen is considering is Xavi Hernández,’ currently unattached following his stint in charge of Barcelona.

They consider that Xavi’s style fits perfectly with what the sports management is looking for and his experience as coach of Al Sadd and then his time at the head of Barça are points that play in his favor to reach the BayArena.’
