Many of Bayern and Inter’s most exciting players will miss the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday due to injury, with the Bundesliga side particularly plagued by fitness concerns in recent weeks. However, they are hopeful of recovering at least some of their key absentees for the return match at the San Siro.
The hamstring injury that sidelined Jamal Musiala during Bayern’s last league outing was the final, and arguably most significant, blow for Vincent Kompany’s side. It added to a series of physical issues that have kept several key players out recently, significantly weakening them ahead of their crucial European tie against Inter.
The Belgian coach had already been without Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Hiroki Ito, Alphonso Davies, and Kingsley Coman, with Aleksandr Pavlovic’s situation also uncertain due to his ongoing battle with mononucleosis since late February.

Ito and Davies have both suffered season-ending injuries, and Upamecano is also confirmed to miss the second leg against Inter, with Bayern announcing at the end of March that he would be sidelined for ‘several weeks.’
Neuer and Coman are the two players Kompany hopes to recover in time for the San Siro clash, scheduled for April 16. The French winger has missed Bayern’s last four Bundesliga matches, while the goalkeeper is racing to regain fitness after suffering a calf injury.
Pavlovic’s return date is more difficult to predict, as mononucleosis can affect a player’s form for an extended period even after recovery. As a result, the medical staff will need to closely monitor the young midfielder’s progress.
While relatively healthier than their opponents, Inter have also faced their own injury concerns recently.
Denzel Dumfries will be the most significant absence for Simone Inzaghi, as the Dutch wing-back suffered a muscular injury during a strong run of form, leaving his coach without one of his team’s most dangerous offensive weapons.
The Netherlands international will certainly be ruled out of Inter’s second leg against Bayern Munich at San Siro, and so will Piotr Zielinski, whose medial ligament calf injury is expected to keep him sidelined until early May.

Inzaghi will be particularly short of attacking options at the Allianz Arena, as Joaquin Correa is not included on Inter’s Champions League squad list. Lautaro Martinez, who has just recovered from injury, Marcus Thuram, and Marko Arnautovic will be the only forwards available, with Mehdi Taremi still dealing with a left thigh strain.
There is a possibility that the Iran international could be called up for the second leg, but even in that case, his condition is unlikely to be ideal, as he has been out of action since late March.
Inzaghi also mentioned that Alessandro Bastoni, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Federico Dimarco were all substituted during Inter’s last Serie A game at Parma due to fitness concerns. However, Dimarco is expected to be the coach’s only doubt for the first leg, as he has been training separately in recent days, while the other two are expected to be on the pitch despite not being in perfect form.
