With Joshua Kimmich's contract set to expire at the end of the season, Bayern Munich are trying hard to secure an extension.

In an interview with Sport Bild, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl reveals that he has told the 29-year-old that he wants him to succeed Manuel Neuer as club captain.

"I think we are very, very open with him," Eberl said in the interview, adding:

“We tell him: We want to extend your contract. We are telling him that he should become captain when Manuel Neuer is no longer on the pitch. And we tell him that he should be the face of our club. We've made that clear to him and we stand behind it.”

Kimmich earns a reported €20 million a year, and while the Bayern bosses are trying to cut costs, it's been reported that the Germany captain is reluctant to take a pay cut.

Commenting on these reports, Eberl said:

"As far as the salary is concerned and what is being speculated in public, I can only say: We are trying to extend Josh's contract and we will try to reach an agreement.

“hat concerns the sporting aspects, the prospects, but also the financial aspects. We want to reach an agreement with Josh on all three levels.”
