Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl criticised sections of the Schalke support for abusing Manuel Neuer during Bayern Munich’s 0-0 Bundesliga draw at the Veltins-Arena on Saturday. It was most likely the goalkeeper’s final appearance there.
“Those are compliments, that’s love. Every boo, even when I touched the ball, was a compliment,” the Bayern captain told Sky.
“I played here for more than 20 years. It was a very emotional day and something very special.”
The 40-year-old came through Schalke’s academy and became a key figure before moving to Bayern in 2011. Many in Gelsenkirchen have not forgiven that switch, and hostility resurfaced with loud jeers throughout.
Eberl said Schalke should be proud of nurturing such a player who then became the world’s best goalkeeper and a world champion, adding that while boos against Bayern are part of the contest, personal insults are out of place.
