FC Bayern want to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, but talks are proving difficult. Now a transfer insider gives an update.

FC Bayern are continuing to work intensively on a contract extension with defender Dayot Upamecano – and according to Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg, there is a good chance that the French international will remain with the club in the long term.

„Many clubs have positioned themselves. But I’m still convinced – even after everything I’ve heard from our sources at the club – that Bayern will manage to extend his contract,“ said Plettenberg.

The trend is clear: despite international competition, the record champions are determined to keep the 27-year-old beyond 2026. Upamecano himself is said to feel very comfortable in Munich, even if his advisor continues to insist on an exit clause that will take effect at a certain point in time.

„Bayern are doing everything they can to extend Upamecano’s contract beyond 2026,“ added Plettenberg.

High praise from Kompany for Upamecano

Upamecano, who moved to Munich from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, has developed into a mainstay of the defence under coach Vincent Kompany.

Ahead of the top match at PSG on Wednesday, Kompany enthused about the Frenchman: „I always see my players a little better than everyone else. Dayot Upamecano is an absolutely important part of our team. We have very clearly defined roles at our club. It’s not just me who makes the decision. I can judge his sporting qualities. I see him as a very good and happy player.“

FCB sporting director Max Eberl said before Bayern’s departure for Paris about the poker with Upamecano: „Nothing has been finalised yet. Let’s wait and see!“

Internally, the centre-back is regarded as an absolute dream player for the future – also because Bayern have already successfully concluded two long-term extensions with the signings of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies.

Big competition for Bayern with Upamecano

In sporting terms, Upamecano has stabilised after an inconsistent pre-season. The Frenchman is currently impressing with his leadership qualities, strong tackling and high level of concentration. Under Kompany, he is one of the undisputed regulars and, together with Jonathan Tah, forms the heart of the Bayern defence.

According to Sky, this is another reason why the club is confident that the talks will come to a positive conclusion. However, an agreement could still take some time – especially as Upamecano is demanding a pay rise as well as a hand money and a possible exit clause.

According to several media reports, Real Madrid, Liverpool FC and Inter Milan still have the Frenchman on their radar. Nevertheless, there is optimism at Säbener Straße that the 27-year-old will extend his contract in Munich – and thus send a clear signal for his future.
