The saga surrounding Bayern midfielder Joao Palhinha continues. Several clubs have been and remain interested, but there hasn’t been any major movement recently. Now, finally, there’s new momentum in the transfer talks.
In recent days, in addition to Benfica—which has been in talks for weeks—Newcastle United and Aston Villa were also reported to be interested. The English club from Birmingham offered a loan deal, while Newcastle was considering a permanent transfer.
However, the Magpies haven’t been pushing the Palhinha deal forward recently. The Portuguese player is on their shortlist, but there’s no guarantee he’ll actually be considered.
Aston Villa continues to eye the Portuguese player, though the club is still not prepared to offer a direct purchase. Over the weekend, Max Eberl made it crystal clear that an agreement won’t be reached under those terms.

However, there is still some positive news. Benfica has intensified its interest and has recently held productive talks with the player’s camp. According to Portugal’s A Bola, the Portuguese club has already reached an agreement with the player—specifically, on a contract running through the summer of 2030 and a gross salary of around six million euros.
It has already been reported several times that Palhinha is willing to take a pay cut for a move back to his native Portugal.
Another interesting aspect is that, according to the report, Benfica has submitted an offer to FC Bayern. The transfer fee is reportedly a fixed amount of 15 million euros, with an additional five million euros potentially added in the form of variable bonus payments. Benfica is therefore optimistic that an agreement will be reached.
Bayern Munich had most recently demanded a total package of 25–30 million euros, but also recognizes that it is better for all parties involved to finalize the transfer this summer. It is therefore possible that only minor adjustments on Benfica’s part are needed to seal the deal.
