Bayern in the individual critique: One shot makes Diaz a hero!

FC Bayern wins the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid 4:3 and advances to the semi-finals. The Bayern stars in the FCBinside individual review.

Manuel Neuer: He was still the shining hero in the first leg, but in Munich Neuer became a tragic figure. His horror misplaced pass into the feet of Güler after just a few seconds put Bayern behind. Güler’s free-kick to make it 1-2 was well placed, but not unstoppable for Neuer either. But Neuer couldn’t do anything about Mbappé’s 2-3 from close range. In the second half, Neuer then made one good save against Mbappé, who came alone to finish but couldn’t place the ball well. He had no problems with a medium-sharp shot from Valverde. Grade: 4

Josip Stanisic: Had a good chance, but Lunin in the Real goal was able to hold on. In the run-up to the 2:3 goal against, Stanisic was left lying in the Real half after a duel with Rüdiger, but did not receive a foul. He had to be substituted at half-time with a knock. Grade: 3

Dayot Upamecano: When Upamecano won a duel with Vinicius Junior, the arena almost cheered as if he had scored. The Frenchman set up Kane’s 2:2 equaliser superbly, but Mbappé pretty much pulled away from him in a running duel at 2:3. Upamecano did a lot for the build-up play and also got involved going forward, such as with his header from Olise’s free-kick, which went narrowly wide. A strong game from the defender. Mark: 2

Jonathan Tah: When Mbappé made it 2:3, Tah didn’t attack Vinicius consistently enough. In the second half, Tah made one good block against the superstar. Mbappé kept eluding the international, but Tah fought in exemplary fashion. Overall, a solid performance. Mark: 3

Konrad Laimer: Made a clean run to deny Mbappé in an emergency just before the goal and received a round of applause for his efforts. Caused the free-kick with his foul on Brahim Diaz, which Güler tucked away to make it 1-2. Apart from that, won several important duels on his left side of defence. In the second half, Laimer switched to the right side as Davies took over on the left. There, Laimer kept up the pressure forwards and continued to work hard in defence. Good! Grade: 2

Joshua Kimmich: Set up Pavlovic’s 1:1 equalizer with his corner. Failed with a dangerous shot against Real keeper Lunin, who made a brilliant save to keep the ball out. Kimmich created a lot of pressure in midfield and initiated a number of dangerous attacks. Mark: 2

Aleksandar Pavlovic: Headed in from close range after Kimmich’s corner to make it 1-1. Pavlovic did a lot for Bayern’s play, repeatedly carrying balls forward and playing strong passes. Mark: 2

Michael Olise: Had few scenes in the first half, the Real defence had him well under control. Olise thawed a little in the second half. He put a dangerous shot just over the crossbar. In an almost exact copy of this action, his shot also went over. Olise was not really convincing against Real for a long time. But fought his way back into the game and scored the last-minute winner at the end! Grade: 2

Serge Gnabry: Was unimpressive in the ten and was unable to make any impact in Bayern’s attack. A pale performance. Gnabry was substituted after an hour. Mark: 4

Luis Diaz: Made a great effort in the first half, but did not score much. The Colombian had a good opportunity straight after the restart, but his shot in the penalty area was blocked and rolled next to the post. After a pass from Musiala, Diaz suddenly ran alone towards the Real goal, but stumbled over the ball. Then Diaz became the hero in the arena: His shot into the net to make it 3:3 was decisive for the semi-final! Grade: 2

Harry Kane : Had the first Bayern chance immediately after the 0:1, but put the ball over the top. Kane struck ice-cold after Upamecano’s pass, scored the 2:2 equaliser for Bayern and made the arena tremble. Kane then played several more good passes from deep. Mark: 2

Substitute

Alphonso Davies (45th for Stanisic): Won a few duels and played well. solid performance. grade: 3

Jamal Musiala (45 for Gnabry): Served Diaz with a superb pass immediately after coming on as a substitute, but the Colombian missed this one hundred percent chance. Musiala brought new momentum to the FCB game. He set up the decisive 3:3 equalizer by Diaz with his back heel. Grade: 2
