Liverpool have had a wretched season so far, and their struggles can be summed up by major summer signing Florian Wirtz. The midfielder, brought in for over £100m from Bayer Leverkusen, has failed to hit the ground running at Anfield, although there are suggestions that his woes are down to Arne Slot.
Zero goals and three assists in 17 appearances paints a bleak picture for Wirtz, but back in the homeland, it has been claimed that he has been given the short straw at Liverpool, with Slot being the man to have given it to him.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has claimed that Slot has broken multiple promises to Wirtz, which were used to seal his move to Liverpool in the summer.
“Slot promised Wirtz something that he’s now clearly not keeping: build the new team around him with number 10 shirt. That was rubbish. He got the number 7 shirt, and the new team is clearly not playing around Florian Wirtz.”
Wirtz is clearing a fantastic player, so it has been confusing as to why he has struggled so much since moving to Liverpool. There is merit to the claims from Hoeneß that Slot is not playing to the 22-year-old’s strengths, although the player himself should also be able to adapt to the situation that he has found himself in.
In the event that Slot fails to turn things around at Liverpool and is sacked, it would be interesting to see whether Wirtz picks up form. He performed well in the weekend victory at West Ham, but the question is whether he can deliver at that level on a consistent basis.
