Fresh from a 2-1 win over Real Madrid this midweek, Bayern Munich are set to take on FC St. Pauli this weekend in the Bundesliga.

The Bavarians are the runaway leaders of the Bundesliga this season and another win this weekend could further solidify their position at the top of the table.

Speaking ahead of this clash, Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Max Eberl, took a moment to reflect on the midweek win over Real Madrid.

What Max Eberl said about Real Madrid match

Eberl particularly wanted to talk about an incident that saw Alvaro Carreras committing a foul on Michael Olise, an action he felt should have led to a penalty.

However, he did heap praise on Michael Oliver, the referee, for his overall performance on the night.

“Two days have passed. We won at the Bernabeu for the first time in over 20 years, that’s enough for me… but yes, the penalty on Olise could have been given. Anyway, I think that, generally speaking, the referee (Michael Oliver) did a very, very good job,” he said (h/t MARCA).

The Bayern Munich sporting director went on to praise manager Vincent Kompany for expertly guiding the team in the right direction, despite his apparent lack of coaching experience.

“To manage a team and represent a club with this combination of qualities at only 40 years old is truly special,” he said.

Eberl defended Kompany against the public opinion and criticism surrounding the former Manchester City defender, notably praising his mentality and attitude.

“We tried to evaluate his achievements throughout his coaching career and recognized how ‘Vinnie’ shapes his team’s style of play, and we tried to adapt it to our squad.

“The way he combines coaching and his personal qualities is extraordinary. He is always kind, open, and approachable. Moreover, he knows exactly what he wants and how he wants it on the pitch,” he concluded.

Bayern Munich will be heading into the second leg with a one-goal advantage at home, but Real Madrid are not down and out and remain confident they can turn the tie around.
