Manchester City have reportedly shown interest in signing Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, with the Bavarian side wanting to sell the player this summer.
With the legendary Pep Guardiola officially stepping down and returning to Barcelona this week, incoming manager Enzo Maresca and Sporting Director Hugo Viana are analysing the first-team roster ahead of the brand new season.
Despite securing a domestic double in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup before narrowly dropping the Premier League title to Mikel Arteta’s triumphant Arsenal, a significant summer window overhaul is underway for Manchester City.
The focus on the goalkeeping department comes amid an expectation that current No.2 choice James Trafford will leave the club amid an understandable desire to take on a first-choice role elsewhere.
Bayern Munich’s Alexander Nübel has just completed a season-long loan spell with VfB Stuttgart, but is expected to leave the Bavarian giants this summer in search of a fresh opportunity and challenge.
Now, according to SPORT BILD, with Bayern Munich wanting to sell Nübel this summer, potential buyers have made inquiries about the goalkeeper including interest from Juventus and Manchester City.
It is suggested that both clubs have already made contact with the 29-year-old’s management, as those within the Allianz Arena look for a sale price between €10 million and €15 million.
At Manchester City, the current goalkeeping hierarchy features Gianluigi Donnarumma entrenched as the clear number one choice, but questions linger over the long-term backup role.
England international James Trafford arrived at the Etihad for around £27 million last summer, but he may seek a loan or permanent exit to secure regular first-team minutes elsewhere ahead of the new season having expected that position when returning to City.
Should Trafford depart, Nübel presents a cost-effective alternative capable of challenging for domestic cups under Enzo Maresca’s leadership. However, the Premier League giants face competition, alongside rumours that Bayern may use Nübel as a makeweight to lower the price of other senior targets.
