Bayern Munich: Top three performers from 2-1 victory at Celtic

On Wednesday night, Bayern Munich visited Scotland to take on reigning Scottish Champions - Celtic in the first leg of a two-legged playoff tie in pursuit of making it through to the round of 16 in the newly formatted European Champions League.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from the visitors as the hosts did their part to make things uncomfortable for Bayern, particularly in the final 20 minutes of the match. Despite a game showing from the Scottish side, Bayern did enough to take a 2-1 advantage back to the Allianz Arena. Let us look at three players who shone for Bayern Munich to get the first away win of the season in Europe.

Michael Olise

Michael Olise was Bayern’s best attacking player during his 65-minute stay on the pitch. As the right-winger, in and around Celtic's box, his clever movement and link-up play stood out during the first half. He was Die Roten's shining light in the first half when the team struggled to break down Celtic's defense.

Of note, Bayern’s only two shots on target during the first half were from the 23-year-old French attacker from the inside-right channel. It was his sweetly struck effort in the added time of the first half that gave Bayern a 1-0 lead at the interval. Apart from providing impetus in the attack whilst on the pitch, Olise, in typical fashion, also did his fair share of work off the ball. He won four of his six contested ground duels, completed four recoveries, and also made two clearances.

With one eye on Saturday’s upcoming visit to the Bay Arena to take on reigning Bundesliga Champions – Bayer Leverkusen, Vincent Kompany seemingly thought it is best to give Olise a rest, with Bayern leading the game by 2-0 at the hour mark.
