Bayern without Kompany on the sidelines: UEFA cracks down

FC Bayern will have to do without their head coach on the touchline in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. Vincent Kompany has been banned by UEFA and will not be able to follow the explosive clash from the coaching zone as usual – an unusual situation for the meticulous Belgian

Despite the ban, Kompany will start the matchday as usual. Around 90 minutes before kick-off, he will travel with the team from the team hotel to the stadium. However, the usual routine will come to an end on arrival at the latest: the 40-year-old must separate himself from the team immediately and is not allowed to enter the dressing room or make direct contact with his players

Although interviews are still permitted as long as there are no exchanges with the team, Kompany is excluded from the sporting process – at least officially

UEFA takes action: clear rules for banned coaches

During the match itself, Kompany will follow the game from a private box. However, he will not remain unobserved. A UEFA employee will be on site to ensure that all the conditions of the ban are complied with

The communication regulations are particularly strict. Any contact with the coaching bench or the team is prohibited – including via technical aids. The use of cell phones or other communication devices is forbidden during the match. UEFA has consistently enforced these regulations in the past and does not tolerate any grey areas

For FC Bayern, this means that the responsibility on the touchline lies entirely with the coaching team and Kompany’s assistant. Decisions during the match must be made without direct consultation with the head coach

The situation is anything but easy for Kompany himself. The Belgian is considered a detail-obsessed tactician who prepares every game meticulously and also wants to actively influence the game. His displeasure at the ban is correspondingly great

Even though he trusts his coaching staff completely, it will be difficult for him to relinquish control. Internally, Kompany will nevertheless try to structure as many processes as possible in advance in order to help his team in the best possible way

The absence of the head coach is a factor that should not be underestimated, especially in a clash with an opponent like Paris Saint-Germain, where small details can make the difference between victory and defeat. It will therefore be all the more important for Bayern to implement their coach’s instructions consistently, even without his direct influence

One thing is clear: although Kompany will be watching the game from a distance, he is likely to be mentally involved in every scene on the touchline.
