Nizaar Kinsella’s BBC Q&A today had an inevitable update on Enzo Fernandez’s situation at Stamford Bridge.
The journalist said that he was still “inclined to say that he will stay at Chelsea,” given he’s an important player. We’d also add that he has a very long contract, and there might not be any teams out there who are willing to pay what we’d want for him.
Although Kinsella added that this was a prediction based on Chelsea qualifying for the Champions League, which doesn’t look too likely right now.
The BBC’s Chelsea man also reported on two of the potential replacements should Enzo end up going:
“There are likely to be several midfielders on the market this summer, potentially including England internationals Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton,” Kinsella added.
The question is, would either of them want to come to Chelsea? Assuming they have interest from plenty of other teams in the Champions League and we can’t offer them that, it’s a hard sell.
Liam Twomey also took the chance for a big picture look at Chelsea’s season, noting the difference between the manager appointments Chelsea have made under BlueCo to the Roman Abramovich era.
The defence of Chelsea’s sporting directors is that some wastage is inevitable at a big club. But there’s been a lot more than you’d hope.
