Chelsea’s situation with Raheem Sterling is a sticky one, and one that merited the BBC’s explained on the situation which just came out.

The Blues spent £50m on Sterling on 2022 and have him a colossal £325,000 a week contract. That has proved to be a huge mistake for both parties.

Sterling fell out of favour, and Chelsea “effectively ended his role as a first team player.” He went on loan to Arsenal last season, but this summer was right back to where he began, with both he and Chelsea keen to part ways but no acceptable offers coming in.

The easiest way to solve things would be to pay Sterling off for the £30m left on his contract. But Chelsea aren’t willing to pay the whole thing, and Sterling isn’t willing to leave money on the table. Deadlock.

“Sterling is waiting for a clearer picture of how his future as a Chelsea exile looks after the international break,” the BBC piece claims. We’re not sure what he expects – it will be much the same as now, just even more depressing as you see football played all around you, we’d imagine.

Sterling turned down foreign offers; domestic teams turned down Sterling’s wages

The piece claims that Chelsea did all they could to get Sterling a move, but couldn’t find one he would agree to. He wants to stay in London, so the fact that the Blues were able to get Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus interested didn’t count for much. Offers from Saudi Arabia have been on the table, but suit him even less.

Sterling would have preferred Crystal Palace, Fulham or West Ham, but they couldn’t make an offer that matched his contract demands. Deadlock.
