Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United winning 2-0 against Athletic Bilbao.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion the politics entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch and Newcastle United winning in the Champions League…again.
Special focus on the opening goal!
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, a couple of Athletic Bilbao fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:
‘I’m not a Newcastle fan but just watched the highlights out of interest. That Dan Burn header is unfathomably good.
Seriously, who can CURL a header?! Initial trajectory was way wide and somehow he’s spun that with his forehead just inside the post.
It gets better and more befuddling each time you watch it. Superb goal. Can’t think of a more technically excellent headed goal. Ever.’
‘Well done you Geordie’s, from a Tic man, watch Brugge getting ripped off re decisions wrongly against them! But what a game, hopefully you don’t have to play either of them’
‘I’ve never seen a header curled like that. I was sure it was going wide. Bend it like Burn!’
‘Joint fifth in champions league table. Well done Newcastle, a win is a win.’
‘I prefer to look at it as 6th, above Liverpool.’
‘Ironically, ahead on goal difference.
You’d have thought Liverpool had all the firepower they needed….oh, wait….’
‘Looking forward to watching them plummet over the next few weeks.’
‘Seems a bit harsh on Liverpool, we already beat them to one trophy this year…’
‘Just out of interest…
Would anyone like to publicly revise their pre-season predictions for where Newcastle would finish in the Champions League table..?’
‘Dan Burn is now ahead of Isak in the all time Champion’s League goalscoring chart.’
‘Well that’s now 2 Dan Burn headers I will never tire of seeing.’
‘He Cushioned it
Simples
In my next life I want to come back as Big Dan Burn’s dog.’

‘Lewis Hall looked immense when he came on. No fear, pure determination and belief. Got himself (and the team) out of some dangerous situations and turned negative to positive with good feet, close control, drive, strength and vision, impressive comeback.’
‘Thought he had a bit of Sandro and Bruno about him tonight in tight situations. Great mentors for that position. I’ve been looking forward to Hall’s return as well as Tino. When they’re both firing we will be a joy to watch’
‘Why did the commentator on the highlights say Athletic are the only Spanish team we have ever beaten in Europe. Forgot about Barca, Real Zaragoza, Mallorca, Celta Vigo. BBC standards are absolutely shocking these days. Five minutes research would be advisable before making idiotic and incorrect statements’
‘Not a Newcastle fan but Burn deserves his place in the England team on merit he’s not as skilful as the other players but his heading ability is awesome as was proved last night and in the cup final against Liverpool, his sheer physical presence alone will throw fear anxiety and confusion into the oppositions defence…’
‘I wouldn’t tire of watching that Burn goal and I suspect he’ll feel the same… a cracker
Gotta be a picture in his man cave for years to come.’
‘The Eddie Howe statue is back on!’
‘Im struggling to think of a better header (that I have seen). Thing is, you can actually see his head deliberately flick to direct the ball. I dont ever remember seeing that before. Could be wrong but hey, kudos to Burn.’
‘A banana header. I’ve seen everything now.’
‘Banana man.’
‘Header of the season. Possibly header of the century!’
‘Fair play to Newcastle who made a tricky fixture look like a routine victory.’
‘Not denying Burn, he has been absolute quality for you Toon.
Must be involved in the World Cup.
Burn and Maguire could do some serious damage with Rice knocking it in the box.’
‘Dreadfully sloppy play all round by the Magpies but two good headers were enough.’
‘As an Athletic fan, it’s very frustrating to go into a game like this with 9 players out… including NIco Williams and all our forwards.
Was pleased with first half but great header from Burn and bit of bad luck with two shots against the post.
Second goal was a killer and we never looked like overturning the score.. though the young lads did well when they came on.’
‘To play 4 CL games and only concede 2 goals is staggering … the Toon move on … onwards and upwards.’
‘A devout Arsenal supporter wishes to say, DAN BURNS, That drifting curling header needs a special award as header of the season, already. Congratulations Dan. Sublime.’
‘We (Athletic)actually had 9 players out… including both Williams brothers, Sancet and Guruzeta… Basically our entire attack.’
‘If the precision cross from Trippier didn’t already have the counter-clockwise spin on it that you could see after Burn heads it, I’ll eat my hat, and I ride a horse!! The whole thing – including the blocks from Joelinton and Thiaw – was a masterclass.’
‘Shout out to Newcastle’s new-ish set piece coach Martin Mark who undoubtedly played a big part in that.
