Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United losing 3-2 to Liverpool.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion the politics entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch.
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Liverpool fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:
‘Heartbreaking for Newcastle after their heroics.
Bruno G. MOTM for lifting Newcastle up when all looked to be lost.’
‘Bruno G shouldn’t have been on the pitch. Ref bottled sending him off about 5 times.’
‘True about him lifting the team but he should of had a second yellow card ( by the laws of the game).’
‘Same way Gravenberch wasn’t before he scored or Konate for the foul on Barnes when clear through, same way VAR didn’t look at the 2 penalties Newcastle should have had.’
‘Apparently they did look at one but decided it wasn’t a penalty… despite the fact anyone with eyes can see Gravenberch had his arms round Joelinton… makes you wonder doesn’t it…’
‘Bruno shouldn’t have even had a yellow… protesting the ref doing nothing when Konate (already on a yellow) as last man hauled Barnes down. Biased cameras deliberately avoided covering the incident just focused on the follow up. The captain is allowed to question the ref and Konate should of been off… then it would of been 10 vs 10 not 10 vs 12.’
‘We were rubbish and got out of jail there. Konaté shocking again, Kerkez feeble. Well played and unlucky, Newcastle.’
‘I don’t think we were rubbish. We just were harassed by a determined and committed Newcastle team, Konate and Kerkez I’m sure will make it work. Only 2 games in, this league is mad!’
‘We did get out of jail.’
‘absolutely brutal on Newcastle. You just knew that feeling when 11 minutes were up that another goal was coming.’
‘If liverpool were winning then no way is 11 mins added on. Every helping hand is given to this club for some reason.’
‘Massive win for Liverpool and cruel on Newcastle.’
‘I’ve never heard the fans of a team with 10 men cheering 11 minutes of added time before!!
That underlines how poorly Liverpool were playing.
They will be delighted with an undeserved win!’
‘Liverpool fan here, we were unbelievably lucky well played Newcastle.’
‘Newcastle lost more than they know today, they tried to kick us off the pitch and lost 2 of their best midfielders.
As for our performance (in the 2nd half especially)
We were well beaten the whole match, 2nd half was embarrassing.’
‘That may have been an incredible game from a football perspective but from a human perspective, it was beyond awful and made for absolute torture listening to the game. It seriously crossed a line and everyone that stirred things up beforehand should be ashamed of themselves. I don’t care if you want the game of the century, nothing makes it right for things to be that hostile. It’s just wrong.’
‘Did you seriously believe it wouldn’t be hostile? That was fantastic tonight- torture listening? Brilliant and passionate.’
‘I hoped it wouldn’t be but knew that was wishful thinking. It was too much booing and fans wanting blood for my liking. There’s a difference between passion and disrespect.’
‘Lucky Liverpool, outplayed by 10 man Newcastle.’
‘VAR helped Liverpool tonight as well. The PL claimed they were going to clamp down on grappling in the box, yet Joelinton gets grappled to the ground, and VAR turns a blind eye.
Same thing happened to Fulham. VAR is there to protect the Red Cartel.’
‘Intimidated by the crowd. No excuse for Liverpool to be so passive though. Poor!’
‘We were extremely lucky, yes they were at home but Newcastle had more fight. We need to strengthen our defence, sadly konate is making too many mistakes. Not played well so far this season but still 6 points. We can only improve. Unlucky Newcastle. Great game.’
