Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United’s victory over Tottenham.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion though, the politics totally absent.

Instead, what did (and didn’t) happen on the pitch dominating the debate…

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Tottenham fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘As a Spurs fan, I would like to thank Newcastle for trying to give us 5 or 6 goals and all three points. However we are Spurs, so we don’t like to accept that, so you can have the points.’

‘I was just wondering how we win that game having played so bad – but then I remembered we were playing Spurs.’

‘As a Spurs fan I really hate playing Newcastle away. It’s got to the point I’m just glad we didn’t get beat 4-0.’

‘Get off the pitch Joelinton.

He seems to have made the same deal that Rodri has. Unlimited yellow card challenges every game.’

‘As opposed to Maddison’s Oscar winning dives, every game.’

‘We have defenders who are good at defending but not as good as our injured and suspended defenders at playing the ball under pressure.

So we can’t play a high line like Eddie likes to do until at least Schar, and ideally Schar and Botman are back (that’s why we were so desperate for Guehi).

That means we’ve been inviting pressure in all our games this season rather than pressing.’

‘Hahaha Spuds are a joke. They are serial bottlers.

Bottled it in the 3rd week.

And their fans have the audacity to mock Arsenal.’

‘Really awful defending from Spurs truly awful. You can attack as much as you like but if you defend as badly as this you won’t win anything, once again no plan B. I dread to think what will happen in the next game against you know who, if we defend like this.’

‘How did we win that?? Bruno had possibly his worst 80 minutes until he woke up. Gordon really off his game as well. But if we can win those…’

‘Big Ange still thinking he’s playing Cowden Beef in Scotland.’

‘Ange wins trophies…that’s what he does! He can’t beat Leicester or Newcastle though.. Spurs predictably beaten by Newcastle.’

‘It’s the manager. Has only got one way of playing and it sucks. Every team bar Everton will know how to beat us at a canter, give spurs the ball and keep your shape, hit us on the break when we leave massive gaps at the back. Shocking and no wonder every other teams fans take the p out of us. Thoroughly deserved, especially today.’

’72 mins in, I turned to my lad and said “Toon are gonna win this” and they did. Bad as Newcastle were, they were better than Spurs in front of goal ! Spurs are toothless, even their goal was a gift from a keeper that is weak on his left side and a clumsy defender.’

‘I’ve absolutely no idea how Spurs managed to loose the game, poor defending and positioning by Romero who seems to it in most games. Absolutely wasteful in front of goal and the young wingers run well but deliver very little and Son and Kulu not stepping up. Yet another frustrating performance but good finishing from Newcastle though.’

‘Murphy giving Spurs the ball THREE times then laying on the assist to the winner = most NUFC thing ever.’

‘Outplayed Newcastle today and deserved something from it.’

‘Never really looked like scoring, most shots came from way outside the box, porro had like 10 over the bar alone

took an own goal for Spurs to even score.’

‘Got what you deserved, nowt, you couldnt even score against a very poor Newcastle.’

‘Can’t understand why spurs showed no urgency even in the last five minutes .

Great use of the subs bench by Howe.’

‘If only NUFC were allowed to spend what they can afford.’

‘Spurs narrowest defeat away to Newcastle for some time.’

‘Toon not firing on all cylinders at the minute !! But 7 points out of 9 by pure determination.’

‘As a Foxes fan….

Nice to see ex Foxes players doing what they did best for us.

Barnes scoring nice goals….Maddison falling over.’

‘After 38 years supporting Spurs, I think I’m giving up and just not caring Postecoglou hasn’t a clue about building a stong defensive spine, all out attack gung ho tactics will only get this team eighth at best. Yes they finished 5th last year, with no European football and no cup runs. Fed up of caring.’

I’m afraid Ange doesn’t get it when you don’t have the best players in the league. Spurs are so open and vulnerable when they don’t have the ball. The high line especially is exposing the team at almost every opportunity, worse that few in team can sense danger’

‘Spurs at best were total toilet. Over 66% possession and 6 shots on target and we still gift the game to the Magpies. Another season of pain and suffering awaits us. Well done Newcastle you took your chances.’

‘After a few games I have to say that I’m not finding Newcastle remotely convincing so far . They’re under the cosh for a good bit of every game; I don’t think they can base a PL challenge on the sort of possession they get & their position already looks flattering.’

‘Will be different when Schar is back, better distribution and Tonali fit, will start and keep ball better.’
