The defeat followed a humbling Champions League exit to Barcelona, as Newcastle conceded seven goals in Spain to lose 8-2 on aggregate.

Newcastle are 12th in thePremier League and facing an uphill battle to secure European qualification.

Howe has faced criticism as a result but former England captain Rooney has launched a defence.

He called Howe one of the best managers in the Premier League and said Newcastle fans should be cautious about calling for change.

It's the first time that Howe's role at St James' Park has been questioned, having twice led the side to Champions League qualification and won the 2025 League Cup.

"I've heard it a few times now where they're booing and people questioning Howe. Howe is one of the best managers in the Premier League," Rooney said toThe Wayne Rooney Show on BBC.

"You let emotions take over and you lose a game against Sunderland - I know they haven't been great in the league this season, they've had injuries and they've struggled to replace Alexander Isak's goals from last season - but just be careful what you wish for because, honestly, there's no doubt that he's a top manager."
