Sebastian Becaccece will not continue as Ecuador head coach after their last 32 exit at the 2026 World Cup, Superdeporte reports.

Ecuador had been billed as one of the tournament’s surprise packages. It was their fifth finals after appearances in 2002, 2006, 2014 and 2022, with a best of the last 16 in 2006. The squad, the youngest World Cup generation in the country’s history and highly rated, featured names such as Piero Hincapié and Willian Pacho.

They lost their opener to Ivory Coast to a last minute strike after a poor second half. A goalless draw with Curaçao followed, then a final group win over Germany. Hopes of momentum ended with defeat to Mexico in the last 32.

Becaccece said the contract was due to finish with Ecuador’s World Cup and it ended on the day their campaign was over. He accepted they fell short of the aim to produce the country’s best World Cup, with the target set at the quarter-finals, and called the outcome painful.

He thanked the players and the nation for the journey and added that he had no reproaches.
