Hours before facing Juventus in Turin, Benfica paid their respects at the Superga memorial.

According to Glorioso 1904, the club again marked the 3 May 1949 air disaster, which claimed the greatest team in Torino’s history and deepened ties between the clubs.

The Benfica delegation was led by José Pereira da Costa, joined by vice-president Domingos Almeida Lima and former midfielder Carlos Manuel.

Pereira da Costa said they visited with great emotion, to honour historical memory and fulfil an ethical duty to remember the 31 victims.

It was their second visit in less than a year. He also headed a delegation on 29 January 2025 before Juventus v Benfica in the final league-phase match of last season’s UEFA Champions League, which Benfica won 0-2.

Torino operations director Alberto Barile thanked Benfica for their kindness and the respect shown to the club’s history.

The tragedy occurred as Torino, then reigning five-time Italian champions, were returning from a friendly in Lisbon held in honour of Benfica captain Francisco Ferreira, when their aircraft struck a wall of the Basilica of Superga.
