Adam Bareiro was sent off in the first half against Cruzeiro in Brazil after two debatable bookings by Esteban Ostojich. It was not his first run-in with the Uruguayan referee, according to LaNumer12.com.ar.
The first yellow arrived on 39 minutes for persistent fouling, the second followed six minutes later for an alleged challenge on Gerson in Belo Horizonte.
The decision angered Boca’s players and coaching staff, who argued the incident did not merit a caution. Under VAR protocol, second yellow dismissals are not reviewable, so the call stood.
In 2023, while at San Lorenzo, Bareiro faced Fortaleza in a Copa Sudamericana tie in Bajo Flores with Ostojich in charge, a game the Brazilians won 2-0. During that match, Emanuel Brítez stamped on him, an offence the referee did not penalise.
Bareiro received treatment, was then made to leave the pitch because blood was running from his left foot, and he hurled his boot in frustration. He later needed six stitches to his left ankle while his opponent escaped punishment and even the foul was not given. He vented on social media, calling it a total disgrace and saying play simply carried on.
Boca lost 1-0 to Cruzeiro.
