The Belgian Pro League will have 29 players representing its clubs at the 2026 World Cup. Asides from New Zealand, all continents are covered by these 29 players. Ahead of the tournament, we are going to look at each of these 29 players and their chances of achieving World Cup glory, starting with the goalkeepers.
Mohamed Kone – Cote d’Ivoire
Charleroi goalkeeper Mohamed Kone earned a call up to the Cote d’Ivoire national team thanks to forcing his way back into the side at the back end of the season. In 19 games this season in the Pro League the 24-year-old kept six clean sheets, yet he is likely to be a back up at the World Cup. Kone, who joined Charleroi in 2024 from Le Havre, has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Ivorians. Yahia Fofana of Rizespor is likely to be the number one for a side that could surprise a few at the tournament.
Matthieu Epolo – DR Congo
The DRC are back at the World Cup and they are bringing Standard Liege’s talented young goalkeeper Epolo with them. The 21-year-old kept eight clean sheets in 29 games and his shot stopping ability is one of his greatest assets. Like Kone, it is unlikely that Epolo will see much, if any, action at the World Cup this summer. Lionel Mpasi-Nzau of Le Havre has been the sides regular number one, despite limited game time in Ligue 1 this season. The 31-year-old started the most recent friendly for the side.
Injuries could give both a chance to experience a World Cup on the pitch, but it is likely that they will be watching from the bench. However, just being in and around a major tournament should benefit both of their careers.
