Belgium take on Iran at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday in their second Group G match, with both sides aiming for a first win after drawing their opening games.
Belgium head into this fixture with mixed momentum following an underwhelming start to their World Cup campaign. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Egypt in their first group match, struggling to convert chances into a winning result. Prior to the tournament, Rudi Garcia’s team had looked sharp, securing convincing friendly victories against Croatia and Tunisia. However, they now need to rediscover that attacking efficiency if they are to claim all three points.
The squad has been hit by a key absence, as Jérémy Doku has been ruled out due to a respiratory illness. The Manchester City winger battled the issue for two weeks but was ultimately excluded from the matchday squad.
In his place, either Leandro Trossard or Charles De Ketelaere is expected to step in on the wing.
Belgium are also dealing with defensive concerns, with Zeno Debast still unavailable because of a thigh injury. As a result, Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy are set to continue their partnership in central defence.
There is, however, a boost in attack. Romelu Lukaku, who came off the bench to rescue a point against Egypt, is now pushing for a place in the starting lineup and is expected to lead the forward line ahead of De Ketelaere.
Thibaut Courtois will retain his position in goal, with Thomas Meunier and Maxim De Cuyper likely to operate as full-backs.
Possible Belgium starting XI: Courtois; Meunier, Ngoy, Mechele, De Cuyper; Onana, Tielemans; Trossard, De Bruyne, Lukebakio; Lukaku.
The match will kick off at 8pm BST on Sunday, 21st June.
UK viewers can watch the match live and free-to-air on ITV1.
