Real Madrid dropped points for a third game in a row in La Liga as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Osasuna away at El Sadar on Saturday evening.
The game once again made the headlines for some questionable officiating by referee Munuera Montero, with Los Blancos far from happy with how some situations were handled.
One of the headlines was the sending-off of star midfielder Jude Bellingham, who was shown a red card by the referee for his verbal protests.
The incident stemmed from a disputed corner kick appeal by Real Madrid players, with Bellingham being the most persistent in his complaints. Munuera Montero interpreted the Englishman’s words as an insult and immediately showed him a red card.
According to Movistar cameras, the referee told Real Madrid captain Luka Modric that Bellingham had said, “F*** you.”
However, further footage from the same broadcast suggested that Munuera Montero may have misunderstood Bellingham’s words. The midfielder was actually heard saying, “I’m speaking to you with respect – f*** off,” moments before being sent off.
After the match, which ended in a draw, Bellingham addressed the media to clarify the situation and point out the referee’s mistake.
“‘It is clear that a mistake has been made, there has been a miscommunication. I don’t want to say again what I said but it’s more like ‘f*** off’ and I want everyone to know that I didn’t want to put the team in a situation where I wanted to leave the team with ten.”
The Real Madrid midfielder further said that he hopes that the Spanish Football Federation will review the footage and acknowledge the error.
“If you look at the video you can see that it’s not the same as what it says in the report, I hope the Federation takes that into account,” urged Bellingham, hoping that what happened will be reviewed.
“I didn’t insult anyone, it’s clear on the video, I don’t even say it directly to the referee, I say it to myself. It was a lack of understanding, a clear mistake by the referee,” he concluded.
Given the circumstances, Real Madrid are expected to appeal Bellingham’s red card.
