Harry Kane speaks unusually clearly after Bayern’s win in Mainz. The striker criticizes the first half, but praises the team’s mentality.
FC Bayern turned a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 away win at 1. FSV Mainz 05. After the final whistle, Harry Kane was relieved, but was very clear about the weak performance before the break.
„The first half was difficult. We fell below our normal standard in terms of our approach to every game,“ explained the Englishman. Kane saw clear problems against the ball in particular: „We didn’t control the counter-attacks well enough, our rest of the defence wasn’t good enough.“
Munich also lacked the necessary precision in their own possession in the first half. „We were a bit sloppy with the ball,“ said Kane. At the same time, the 32-year-old did not want to talk down the hosts‘ performance: „And you have to give Mainz credit: they punished us in many actions.“

Bayern had to react in the dressing room after the clear deficit. Kane described what was important after the break: „We said at half-time that we had to bring more energy and more intensity.“ The striker felt that this change was immediately apparent: „And I think you could see that from the first minute of the second half.“
In addition to attitude, the record champions also needed class to turn the game around. „Of course you also have to show quality, and I think we did that with the goals we scored,“ emphasized Kane.
The attacker himself scored the goal in the closing stages to make it 4-3 and crown Munich’s comeback. For Kane, the team’s character was the main focus after the wild game: „But compliments to everyone. Coming back from 3-0 down at half-time shows the mentality we have.“
