Ben Clark has signed a new long-term deal to remain Gateshead’s first-team coach. According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland and Hartlepool United defender will continue in his role at the National League club.

Gateshead are seeking a new manager after Rob Elliot, the former Newcastle United goalkeeper, left earlier this week, and hope to appoint his successor over the coming week.

Clark, who previously served as interim manager, joined Elliot’s staff for the second half of last season as the Heed pulled off a remarkable escape from relegation to the National League North, having been 11 points adrift after a 15-game winless run.

He has been in talks over fresh terms in recent weeks, and the agreement means he will form part of the coaching team under the new manager when players return for pre-season next month.

Clark said the club means a great deal to him and he is eager to embrace the new season. He added that he has enjoyed working with the squad day to day and seeing their commitment on match days, and that the feel-good factor around the club and in the community makes him excited to be involved again next season.
