Ben Waine leaves: 4 players Plymouth Argyle should loan out this summer | OneFootball

It is the start of a new era at Plymouth Argyle, with the Pilgrims announcing the arrival of new boss Wayne Rooney last month.

The former Birmingham City and Derby County boss takes over the reins at Home Park, following the departure of Ian Foster in April.

The first task for the ex-Manchester United man to sort out is who will be featuring in his first team plans for the upcoming Championship season, and who could do with some time away from the club.

Here we take a look at some potential temporary departures ahead of the next campaign, with a number of candidates who could benefit from some time away from Devon in search of first team football.

Tyreik Wright

Things haven’t worked out for Tyreik Wright since making the permanent move from Aston Villa in the January of 2024, with the pacy wide man struggling for game time at Home Park.

With just 89 minutes of second tier football under his belt last season, the forward returned to previous club Bradford City on loan for the second half of the previous campaign, and was a much more regular feature for the Bantams than he was in Devon.

Although Rooney will want to give the once over to all of the new players at his disposal, another move away from PL2 looks likely for Wright, although a permanent move may even be the preferred option after 18 months of warming the bench.

Saxon Earley

The last year has been something of an injury nightmare for Saxon Earley, with the defender suffering two anterior talo-fibular injuries which have seen him unable to play competitive football since August 2023.

After suffering the first of his setbacks, the 21-year-old was loaned out to Wycombe Wanderers to regain fitness during the previous campaign, only for a repeat injury to occur before he could kick a ball in anger for the Buckinghamshire club.

With the news that he could be back in training in July, Earley will be given every opportunity to get back to full-fitness ahead of the next campaign, but a potential loan move could help him get back to full strength before being utilised in the second tier.

Caleb Roberts

The futures of both Caleb Roberts and Freddie Issaka will be interesting to follow this season, with the pair signing their first professional contracts with the club last summer.

After featuring sporadically over the course of the campaign - including a start in the FA Cup clash with Leeds United at Elland Road - Roberts has shown he has the potential to play a part for the Pilgrims at some point, but whether that is next season remains to be seen.

His skill, work rate and composure on the ball are all great attributes to have for a midfielder of his ilk, but a move to a club in the third or fourth tier could be an ideal solution for all parties ahead the next campaign, as the teenager gets more minutes under his belt in the EFL.

Ben Waine

This one is a tricky one, as Ben Waine is one of the most endeared players at the club at this moment in time, with the Green Army taking the New Zealander under their wing since his arrival in January 2023.

A player whose work rate and desire is never questioned, Waino managed just two goals from his 32 league appearances last season, although only nine of those were from the first whistle.

The forward currently has a contract that ends at the end of the next campaign, although the club do have the option of extending that for another year, and with regular football under his belt at another EFL club, he could come back full of confidence and firing.

On the other hand, the chance to learn from one of the greatest strikers this country has ever seen could bring out the best of the Kiwi, but at 22 years of age, he still has time to develop into a top goal-getter, so a move away for the season ahead would be the best option.
