According to L'Équipe, a heated team meeting in Kuwait on Monday 5 January saw Medhi Benatia challenge Leonardo Balerdi, three days before the Trophée des champions against PSG.

The squad were called in around midnight by director of football Medhi Benatia and president Pablo Longoria. Benatia launched a lengthy address focused on the 0-2 defeat at Nantes on 4 January and the team’s inconsistency.

Tension rose when the question of access to the first-team dressing room resurfaced.

Players complained it had become a thoroughfare for club staff, eroding their privacy, a point raised by Balerdi. Benatia asked at least three times whether he was the one paying the dressing room rent.

Geronimo Rulli broke off the exchange by reminding the group that a major match awaited in three days. That game finished 2-2, then 1-4 on penalties.
