Silva, 48, departed Fulham a few days ago after five seasons in England.

He took Fulham back to the Premier League by winning the Championship in 2022.

For the former defender, it is a return to Lisbon, having managed Sporting more than a decade ago.

His brief is to restore Benfica as champions of Portugal, a title they have not held since 2023.
