Tomás Araújo has signed a new Benfica contract to June 2031, with the announcement to follow, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Benfica had been close to an agreement after rebuffing interest from leading La Liga and Premier League sides in the Portuguese international. The club then pushed ahead with renewal talks.
Araújo was previously tied down until 2029, but the Rui Costa-led hierarchy deemed a revision necessary given his rapid progress and growing role.
His pay packet was also a factor. Owing to a 2024 deal signed before his current prominence, he had been among the squad’s lower earners.
Rui Costa has moved to address that and acknowledge the No 44’s rise. The longer commitment strengthens Benfica’s position around a player viewed as key to the present and the future.
