Benfica and Sporting have entered the race for Grêmio prospect Gabriel Mec, according to Portal do Gremista.

The player’s representatives have already met Benfica to begin a possible negotiation. Sporting are due to hold talks on Tuesday, 24 February, to understand the conditions on the player’s side. Benfica recently missed out on Kauã Prates.

The Lisbon rivals are the latest to register interest in the youngster, who has impressed for Grêmio under Portuguese coach Luís Castro.

Other clubs are also monitoring his progress, including Shakhtar Donetsk and Liverpool.

Grêmio have not yet taken a concrete position on Mec’s future, though the Porto Alegre club are braced for potential approaches after his performances for both the club and Brazil’s youth teams.
