Benfica face a decisive run-in with second place on the line against Sporting, and Champions League access at stake. A berth would mean at least the third qualifying round, an objective that could define next season.

According to Glorioso 1904, the sums are significant. Sporting have earned about 80 million euros from this season’s competition, while Benfica, eliminated earlier, brought in more than 50 million, and missing out drops income towards 10 million.

At present Benfica hold the edge on 75 points, three ahead of Sporting, but with one game more played. They now depend only on themselves to clinch the target as each round takes on added weight.

Former goalkeeper Quim said the league campaign had not been very consistent, though the team are enjoying a good spell.

With three matches remaining, Benfica are treating them as finals. The outcome of this fight will directly influence sporting and financial planning for next season.
