Benfica’s 4-2 win over Real Madrid and Sporting’s triumph in Bilbao have propelled Portugal up UEFA’s country ranking. The country is back in sixth place, strengthening its Champions League allocation.

A Bola reports that Portuguese clubs have staged a historic recovery this season, after starting 5.284 points behind the Netherlands. Portugal now sit 0.937 points ahead.

The Lisbon clubs capitalised on defeats for Ajax and PSV, and Portugal’s coefficient stands at about 67.366 points. Sixth place grants three Champions League berths, two automatic and one via qualifying.

The position could be cemented by Braga and Porto, whose Europa League ties are still to come.

On Wednesday, 29 January, José Mourinho’s Benfica made history by beating Madrid 4-2 in the Champions League. Anatoliy Trubin struck at 90+8 minutes, a goal that meant Benfica overtook Marseille on goal difference.
