Benfica have started talks to re-sign former forward Joao Felix from Chelsea.
The Portuguese side have opened discussions with Felix’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to work on a transfer that would see Felix return to Lisbon.
The forward came through the academy ranks at Benfica before a breakout campaign in 2018/19. He scored 20 goals in 43 games as Benfica won the Primeira Liga title before moving to Atletico Madrid in a record-breaking £113m deal.
Felix has endured mixed fortunes since his departure from Benfica, and struggled after signing for Chelsea last summer. He was loaned to AC Milan in January, but again failed to make an impression in Italy.
The player is keen on a return to Benfica as he looks to reignite his career. Fabrizio Romano is reporting that negotiations over the deal are expected to advance imminently.
Chelsea signed Felix for a fee of £45m from Atletico last summer and are keen to recoup as much of that investment as possible. Benfica this week broke their transfer record after completing the signing the Colombian midfielder Richard Ríos from Palmeiras for €27m.
Benfica manager Bruno Lage, who gave Felix his first-team debut during a previous spell as caretaker manager, has confirmed the club’s interest. However, he admitted the financial package must be right for the Portuguese side.
“There’s a desire on both sides. Joao is a special player for this club. However, we must look at the financial aspect.”
