Benfica condemned violence before the futsal derby with Sporting and, in a statement on Friday, said it is cooperating with authorities to identify those responsible.

The match, played on Thursday at Pavilhão João Rocha, ended 2-2 in the Liga’s 16th round.

The behaviour was described as incompatible with the club’s historic and founding values, and contrary to the spirit of sport and healthy rivalry.

The stated aim is to help identify responsibility and support the prevention and eradication of such conduct, deemed gravely damaging to Portuguese sport.

With several meetings between the clubs ahead, an appeal was made for responsibility from all involved and for an atmosphere of respect, dignity and healthy competition, incompatible with any form of violence.
