Benfica have confirmed Christy Ucheibe will leave when her contract expires at the end of this month, ending six seasons at the club. The Nigerian defender, 25, was among the longest-serving players at Luz, and the news follows Cristina Martín-Prieto’s exit.
According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica offered Ucheibe a new deal, but she turned it down in favour of a more lucrative proposal from a Saudi Arabian club.
Initial exploratory contacts have taken place in recent weeks, with intermediaries linked to the Saudi market assessing the conditions for a possible move. The salary on offer in Saudi Arabia may ultimately convince the player.
She matured on and off the pitch, became a Nigeria international and was crowned African champion in 2024, and built a strong rapport with Benfica supporters. She leaves with emotion and hopes to return one day.
Ucheibe made 179 appearances and scored 11 goals for Benfica. She was a key figure in six league titles, as well as two Portuguese Cups, five League Cups and two Super Cups.
