Benfica said in a statement that 18-year-old centre-back Mauro Furtado has joined Girona on a permanent deal, with the club retaining 50 percent of any future sell-on profit. His departure ends a 13-season association after completing his development at the Estádio da Luz.

The transfer could be worth about €1 million in exchange for 50 percent of the player’s economic rights. Across Benfica’s youth ranks he won an Under-15 national title, two Under-17 competitions and the Under-19 national championship.

Furtado’s rise extended to Portugal’s age-group sides, enjoying a standout 2025 as an Under-17 European and World champion.

In 2025/26 he split his season between Benfica’s Under-19s and Under-23s. He made 17 appearances and scored three goals for the juniors, and played six times for the Under-23s.

He now heads to Catalonia to continue his development with Girona. The Catalan club intend to back the defender and view him as a longer-term option as they look to return to Spain’s top tier.
