Benfica could face a heavy UEFA sanction, potentially a fine or an away ticket sales ban in European competitions, after clashes between supporters and police en route to the Estádio Bernabéu last Wednesday before the Real Madrid match.

According to El Chiringuito de Jugones, around 30 Croatian casuals linked to the visiting ultras were behind the police charge. A Benfica casual left the security pen and refused to uncover his face, which prompted the intervention and led to tense scenes.

UEFA’s disciplinary regulations state that any disturbance, inside or outside a stadium and before, during or after a match, can lead to punishment, even if a club can demonstrate no negligence.

Objects were thrown and officers were pushed, and racist behaviour by a supporter was also observed before entry. With prior issues involving away support in Europe, any sanction could be severe.

Benfica visit Gil Vicente on Monday, 2 March, at 20:15, at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos. The fixture is part of the 24th round of Liga Portugal Betclic. They are third with 55 points.
