Benfica have decided not to admit United States fund Entrepreneurial Equity Partners into Benfica SAD, ending talks over José António dos Santos’s 16.38% stake, with the businessman known as the "Rei dos Frangos".

"I have no doubt that more people are interested," José António dos Santos said, speaking to Negócios.

A pre-agreement between EEP, Grupo Valouro and Santos had led to several meetings and exchanges of information.

Reviewing EEP’s growth plan indicated potential clashes with Benfica SAD’s statutes, notably the fund’s aim to hold minority stakes in other European clubs that could breach non-competition rules. Both sides agreed not to continue to protect both parties.

Santos maintains his intention to sell and his holding remains on the market for prospective investors.
