Benfica loanee Gustavo Marques has received a 12-match suspension in Brazil for sexist remarks aimed at referee Daiane Muniz after Red Bull Bragantino’s 1-2 loss to São Paulo in the Campeonato Paulista quarter-finals. The ban covers state competitions.
According to Glorioso 1904, the centre-back criticised the Federação Paulista for appointing a woman to officiate the tie, claiming her performance ended their hopes of progressing and that matches of this magnitude should not be overseen by a woman.
He later apologised in the mixed zone, asking forgiveness from women and admitting he was hot-headed and said things he should not.
Before the tribunal’s ruling, Red Bull Bragantino fined him 50% of his salary and excluded him from the next match against Athletico Paranaense. The club donated the fine to Rendar, an NGO that supports women in vulnerable situations in the Bragança Paulista region.
Marques moved to Portugal in 2022 on loan to Torreense, then Benfica bought him from Atlético Mineiro in summer 2024. He has mainly featured for Benfica B, with a two-minute cameo in the 15th round of 2023/24 against Famalicão when the team were coached by Roger Schimdt.
