It is no secret that Alvaro Carreras has emerged as a serious target for Real Madrid this summer.

The Spanish giants are determined to upgrade their ranks in the left-back unit, with the SL Benfica star emerging as the ideal candidate.

Reports earlier in the month had claimed that Real Madrid would speed up the pursuit of Carreras after the Portuguese Cup final which ended in a defeat for Benfica.

Reports also indicate that Los Blancos have a deal in place with Carreras, who is more than willing to take the next step in his career by returning to the Bernabeu.

Benfica preparing to announce Carreras exit

Journalist Eduardo Burgos has now offered a fresh update on Real Madrid’s pursuit of Alvaro Carreras, suggesting that Benfica are now preparing to announce the exit of their star defender.

Everything suggests Real Madrid will trigger Carreras’ exit clause, which is set at €50 million. Real Madrid were initially keen on lowering the price tag for the Spaniard, but it appears negotiations with Benfica haven’t been as productive.

A figure of €50 million is indeed a fortune, even for Real Madrid. But the club are serious about adding more depth and quality in defence. As such, they are willing to meet Carreras’ release clause.

Carreras is expected to join Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen in the list of defenders who have already signed for Real Madrid, although the club are still yet to confirm the deal for Alexander-Arnold.

That said, Burgos claims that Carreras will be Real Madrid’s final defensive signing for the coming summer.

The club are now expected to shift their attention towards midfield, where they have already identified a few key targets including Stuttgart’s rising star, Angelo Stiller.
